TalkingGigs is delighted to continue our North African musical journey with Iness Mezel and Nora Abdoun Berber Duo.

The Sheffield University Drama Studio will provide a perfect setting for what promises to be an intimate, enlightening and unplugged performance.

Award-winning singer and songwriter Iness Mezel, performs a duo with her life-long friend and bandmate Nora Abdoun. Nora, who like Iness, is a Berber from Algeria, plays traditional percussion instruments including  the “Bendir” a frame drum emblematic of Berber/Amazigh identity, a two thousand-year-old culture which has long suffered and still suffers from oppression and invisibility.

At the intersection of the fight for women’s rights and Amazigh cultural recognition, the two women are raising awareness in recalling the heritage of their unsubdued Amazigh ancestors, celebrating their eagerness for freedom and their independent spirit.

Our TalkingGigs format explores the Berber /Amazigh culture and its music in the first half followed by an all music second half.

As ever, the gig will be raising money for Sheffield ASSIST who do such important work with refugee communities in Sheffield.
