Ruhaani are a trio of musicians exploring the threads that connect Sufi folk music traditions and both North and South Indian classical music. They draw on the mystical song forms of Qawwali and Islamic Nasheeds creating their own unique arrangements.
Lead singer Sarah Yaseen, aka Sarah The Sufi, is a versatile musician with a soulful, sonorous voice and has a zeal for the preservation of Sufi poetry & music.
Vijay Venkat is a multi instrumentalist, singer, multi-genre performer and composer who has trained under some of the great maestros of Carnatic music in India. He is a fluent performer on violin, viola, bansuri flute and Vichitra Veena.
John Ball holds a deep seated passion for Indian classical music, expressed in Ruhaani through driving rhythms on the Indian tabla drum and the Kashmiri santoor, an 100 stringed dulcimer.
All 3 have played together in the wonderful Rafiki Jazz, but in Ruhaani have come together as a trio to explore and combine their own traditions. The group will talk about these and the inspiration for working together ... and play some heavenly music.
